Know the effort
South Bank is mainly level, but bridges, station interchanges and older pavements vary. Use TfL’s step-free planner and each venue’s access page.
Arrive at Waterloo or Westminster for Route A and leave from London Bridge. This avoids backtracking. For Route B, use Tottenham Court Road or Holborn. Check TfL live status and step-free routing.
Monmouth Coffee, Borough
A long-established specialist roaster beside Borough Market; use it as the finish, not a cross-city detour.
Book only the anchor
Book a free museum time slot where offered; reserve any paid exhibition that is the reason for travelling. Borough Market itself does not need a ticket.
Keep the day usable
Route B works better in prolonged rain. On Route A, replace the open riverside stretch with a longer Tate visit.
Protect the good part
Trying to add Westminster, Tower Bridge, South Kensington and Camden to one day. London rewards one compact corridor.
A simple way to explore
Keep the day south of the river: begin at Westminster or Waterloo, follow the Thames east, give Tate Modern a proper visit, then finish around Borough Market. Avoid crossing London for a second headline attraction.

Begin with South Bank riverside walk. Give this first stop enough time to establish the character of London, and check any current access or visitor information before travelling.

Continue to Tate Modern as the main middle section of the day. Keep the visit flexible, with time for a local break rather than rushing directly onwards.

Allow 60–90 minutes around South Bank riverside walk, 60–75 minutes for Tate Modern, then another 45–75 minutes for Borough Market or a slower local break. Add travel time between them and protect the return journey.
Choose independent
Borough Market has independent traders, but the useful local choice is to buy one thing and move on. Flat Iron Square and Bankside side streets add smaller cafés and shops without leaving the South Bank route.

The useful insight
London becomes manageable when the river is the organising line. Keep both sides of the day within the South Bank and Bankside area; a Tube journey to a second district changes the trip completely.
